Mapping

Data Visualization

5 Motors (highlight with pink) at the left hand side were mapped to heart rate because the heart located at the left of human body. And the right hand side motors (highlight with purple) referred to body movement of wearer. Pink and purple arrows showed the horizontal movements. Orange arrows presented the vertical looping generated by all the motors.

Inputs

-- Heart rate read from Polar Transmitter and hear rate interface (HRMI). Wearer needed to wear the transmitter on the chest to measure heart rate. Then the HRMI would receive data from the transmitter.

-- Body movement is read from accelerometer.

Outputs

The output was the kinetic movements which driven from 10 servo motors. The Ardino program calculated the values reading from accelerometer and heart rate meter. Horizontal movements ran twice in the first 20 seconds. Every 10 seconds showed the result on left and right hand side of the dress. The movement on each side might be different, because right hand side referred to the wearer’s body movements and left hand side related to the heart rate. Then the program would calculate the average value in the last 30 seconds, which the result was used for the vertical looping movements. The looping would repeat for 4 times after the horizontal movements. However, if the wearer was in a calm mood, there was no vertical movement.

For instance, the average value was 532 from accelerometer and heart rate was 107 in the first 10 seconds. There were 2 motors ran at the same time on the right hand side of the dress, and 5 motors ran on the left hand side. 570 and 100 were the values from accelerometer and heart rate meter for the second 10 second. 5 motors ran on the right hand side, and 4 motors ran on the left simultaneously. The third value is the average of last 30 seconds, results from accelerometer and heart rate meter were 542 and 107. It showed that wearer was in emotional stress mode, motors started to run one by one from bottom to the top in order on each side and repeated the looping for 4 times. When the looping finished, the program would restart the calculation.

1) Horizontal movements

Horizontal movements generated from numbers of motors on left or right hand side, which referred to the heart rate or body movements.

-- Left hand side - Numbers of motors were mapped to the range of the heart rate change. The normal range of a healthy 20-30-year-old person was 60-100 beats per minute. Therefore, when the wearer’s hear rate was over 100 beats per minute, 5 motors would run at the same time to generate a strong shaking to inform wearer. The movements from top 4 motors referred to the range of heart rate from 100 to 60 beats per minute. For instance, if the wearer’s heart rate was 78 beats per minute, the top two motors would run at the same time.

-- Right hand side - The same as the horizontal movements at left hand side, right hand side related to the body movements of wearer. Through experimentations, the data from the Y-axis of accelerometer was around 550 when the wearer was standing still. This value would change when the accelerometer was placed at a different location or rotated to different orientations. Any changes might influence the veracity of the accelerometer.

2) Vertical looping movements

Vertical looping movements generated from motors on both sides of the dress, which represented the different statuses of the stress from the wearer. The motors would run one by one in order from the bottom or top.

-- Non-Emotional stress - The physical body changes would influence people’s mood emotion. When wearer was in active body mode, the value read from accelerometer would be over 550, and heart rate to over 100 beats per minute. The motors on both sides ran in loops from top to bottom. This presented the non-emotional stress of the wearer. People’s heart rate increased when they were doing sports or during physical actions such as running, jumping, or walking fast.

-- Emotional stress - The emotional stress caused by the extrinsic influence, such as the onlookers, sound, noise, light, temperature. The body status might be static. When wearer was in static body mode, the value read from accelerometer would equal or be lower than 550, her heart rate turns to be 100 beats or lower in every minute. The motors would run in loops from bottom to the top. This presented the emotional stress of the wearer. This usually happened in the special occasions, such as public presentation, formals, ceremony.
